Bone Demineralization in Captive Boas (Boa constrictor constrictor): Report on Three Cases
Inadequate care may lead to various diseases in reptiles, such as metabolic bone diseases, especially nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism. Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) can estimate bone mineral density and is considered an important tool for diagnosing early demineralization processes. We report three cases of bone demineralization in captive boas (Boa constrictor constrictor). Bone mineral density values for vertebral trabecular bone were significantly lower than those described in free-ranging boas. The authors suggest that captivity has an influence in the development of bone demineralization. This should be taken into account during the care of captive boas so that preventive measures can be taken.Abstract
